The beautiful days are approaching, and with them the ceremonies. Weddings, baptisms, communions, pacs, spring brings its share of festivities and thus existential questioning, but what are you going to wear? Today, we advise you to dress well for a wedding, but not too much, you don't want to overshadow the groom!
The traditional suit
It is the tradition, in order to dress well for a wedding, we take out the suit! In addition to being super elegant, wearing a suit shows respect for the bride and groom, but above all, it is a way of respecting propriety. Unless the wedding is themed, your role is not to attract attention with an offbeat outfit or to overshadow the happy couple.
Choosing the right suit
It goes without saying that to be elegant at a wedding, you need to choose the right suit, starting with the material. As always, favour natural materials such as cotton, wool or linen depending on the season.
Next, it is extremely important to choose the right cut of your suit. For the jacket, as always, make sure that the shoulder seam coincides with the break in your shoulder. The length of the sleeves should stop at the level of your wrist bone. The total length of the jacket should stop before the first finger of your hands. For a wedding, choose a classic jacket, with two buttons.
For the trousers, ditto, you should pay attention to the cut. The leg should be tapered and go with your leg without molding it. The trousers should fall straight over the shoe without forming a crease.
As an option, you can choose to wear a three-piece suit and therefore also wear a waistcoat. You should choose a waistcoat that is as close to the body as possible or adjust it with the help of the waistband. In this case, you should not wear a belt!
What colour suit should I choose for a wedding?
For a wedding, you can choose a suit in navy blue, light grey, charcoal grey and even burgundy if you are daring. The idea is to be elegant and solemn, but not to overshadow the groom.
Black is often the usual suit colour chosen for a wedding. However, as you know, it is not the only choice and you can choose another colour. The only rule here is to keep it simple and elegant. Unless the theme of the wedding lends itself to it, avoid colours that are too flashy
What colour shirt should I wear to a wedding?
For a wedding, the most common shirt colour is white, but you can also wear a light blue shirt. In general, there is no need to look for a colour that is too bright. It's a simple rule of thumb that has been proven to work.
However, if you want to go a little further, the colour of your shirt will depend largely on the colour of your suit. The first rule is that you should choose a shirt that is lighter than the suit or tie you are wearing. However, the choice of colours is quite limited: white, light blue, light pink. These are generally the only three colours that can match your suit.
Also be careful to choose a shirt collar that is rigid enough and suitable for wearing a suit and tie.
What shoes to wear with a suit?
If you opt for a traditional wedding outfit, i.e. a suit, you have two choices of shoes to wear to a wedding: the derby or the richelieu. The choice of one or the other, as well as the colour, will depend on the level of formality of the wedding.
If the wedding ceremony is very formal and traditional, you should choose black richelieu. There's really no need to debate the subject, richelieux are more formal than derbies and black is the most formal colour there is.
However, don't worry, there is more to dressing for a wedding than that and if the wedding is traditional but not 100% formal, there are other options. In fact, it's simple, the lighter the shoe, the lower the level of formality. From the most formal to the least formal colour we find: black - dark brown - cognac - medium brown and finally burgundy.
If you want to know what shoes to wear with a suit, just ask:
black shoes with a black suit;
black or burgundy shoes with a dark grey suit;
black, dark brown, medium brown or burgundy shoes with a light or medium grey suit;
black, dark brown, medium brown and burgundy shoes with a navy blue suit.
What colour socks should I wear to a wedding?
For a wedding, it is best to wear socks that match the colour of your suit or shoes. The first option lengthens the leg, ideal if you are short, the second shortens it, perfect if you are tall.
What about the tie?
Last but not least, the colour of the tie. The choice of tie will depend on the colour of your suit, but also of your shirt. To remain sober and elegant 4 colours are possible: navy blue, grey, burgundy and fir green.
With a navy blue or grey tie, you take no risk, it will match whether you choose a navy blue or grey suit. The burgundy tie is to be avoided with the pink shirt, as for the fir green, it will be ok with a white and sky blue shirt.
That's it, it's dense, but you normally have all the cards in your hand to dress well for a wedding. You'll notice that we've kept it very simple and that we don't talk about patterns for either the shirts or the ties. However, keep in mind that this is an option and we will, perhaps, address this point one day.
